Project description

This project seeks to analyze the relative resilience of the socioecological system in the inner Niger river delta in Mali through a case study of the main food production systems of the delta.
Focusing on the three main food production systems, rice farming, herding and fishing, and the interaction between these production systems and the surrounding ecosystems, the drivers, pressures and state impacting the resilience was examined through the DPSIR framework and seven principles for resilience. The relative resilience of the food production systems was found to be relatively low.
Two responses for raising resilience are suggested. The responses focus on diversifying the farming systems, promoting more polycentric governance systems. However, the current regime and landscape configuration in Mali and the inner Niger delta, mean that an implementation of the developed responses might meet a series of challenges.
